ABSTRACT
Two guest star and cast member pairings in a November 20, 1999 broadcast of Saturday Night Live (SNL) speak to the difference a decade has made not only for NBC, but for broadcast television more generally. The opening skit featured SNL regular Darryl Hammond impersonating Donald Trump and announcing not only that he was running for president, but also that his running mate would be John Carpenter, the big winner of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, the ABC gameshow that was then a national obsession. An opening monologue followed in which guest host and NBC sitcom star Jennifer Aniston interacted with Tina Fey, just promoted to head writer of SNL, but almost nine years away from her infamous impersonation of Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Planted in the audience, a then-unknown Fey posed as a stalker of Aniston and her boyfriend Brad Pitt. In the decade since this episode aired the programming that is considered by viewers to be Must-See TV and the places and devices on which to watch it have changed dramatically.
