ABSTRACT
Roman gardens were both a place of horticultural production and a space of social encounter. But what kind of encounter and with what results? Social encounters are not neutral events, they provoke a response consonant with the tensions and expectations of the participants, and at the very minimum they maintain and reaffirm the status quo. e experience of an encounter determines its outcome, while the place of encounter influences that experience.
