ABSTRACT

Vautiya (Yautiya) M1 region in southern Persis, southwestern Iran. Within it lay the city of Tarava (mod. Tarum), where Vahyazdata, a pretender to the Persian throne, rose up in rebellion against the Persian king Darius I on his accession in 522, with the support of local Persian forces (*DB 40). An identification has been proposed between Vautiya and the people called the Utians (q.v.), attested in Herodotus.
