ABSTRACT

Already from the beginning of summer 1715 the Ottoman forces had started their advance into the Peloponnese. They were headed by the Grand Vizier Ali Kioumourtzi and had the assistance of the fleet under the Kapoudan Pasha Tzanoum Hotza. The enterprise took the form of a whirlwind sweeping away everything in its way. One after the other the large fortresses of the Morea were captured or surrendered, slaughter and captivity following.1
