ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the interpersonal processes that contribute to the development of an insecure attachment system. I discuss early disruptive and abusive experiences of care as representing a contributory risk factor for developing an insuf®cient and fragmented sense of self. The destructive resolution of an individual's intra-and interpersonal con¯icts can be displayed in violent acts directed towards the self or others.
