ABSTRACT

Arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis is an established method of assessing respiratory and metabolic status. Accurate interpretation of ABG is vital. Nurses providing acute and critical care need to know normal values, causes and associated

treatment of abnormal results. This chapter discusses the disorders in acid base balance most commonly presenting in the acutely/critically ill patient.
