ABSTRACT

Guidelines for suicide assessment and intervention that are consistent with BA may be found in several places (Bongar, 2002; Linehan, 1993). In general, suicide assessment and intervention requires a very active, problem-focused, and concrete analysis of the crisis situation, so a basic BA foundation should be helpful in focusing the clinician on what is required. As discussed in Martell et al. (2001), suicidal behavior is a problem behavior and the goal is to activate alternate behavior. Thus, standard activation procedures as discussed in this book apply, as long as the clinician is employing them in a way that is consistent with the standards of care for suicidal behavior (Bongar, 2002).
