ABSTRACT

The main focus of this chapter is to introduce fieldwork strategies and notetaking, the objective being to lift the act of spectating to that of observing: observing with a focus, in other words – researching. The ethnographic research discussed in this chapter originated from a philosophical enquiry into the artistic evaluation of Men’s Artistic Gymnastics. Therefore, a concept of aesthetics in relation to sport and gymnastics in particular, will be examined to help establish a theoretical context from which to follow this ethnographic study. Such an examination also indicates a point of departure for the procedures used during fieldwork activities. Some of the data collection strategies used in the field will be discussed in the context of the aesthetic details and some tentative findings from the research are outlined.
