ABSTRACT

The 17 June 1915 AWOPC meeting was more placid than its predecessors. Three extra Dardanelles correspondents were agreed for the provincial press and the press agencies; Riddell (in his PPA hat) asked if an Illustrated Press artist could also be accommodated, and Brade undertook to investigate. It was agreed that Friday casualty lists could be published on Saturday evening as well as on Sunday and Monday morning [the Army remained uneasy about security aspects of casualty list publication, and decided later to omit the theatre of operations]. Swettenham agreed to Riddell’s request that the Bureau be manned by a ‘responsible official’ until 2 a.m., for the ‘convenience’ of the Press. Scott, supported by Baird and Riddell, gained agreement that a Scottish representative now be appointed to the AWOPC.
