Thus, the aim of this chapter is to explore biofeedback and examine whether it can be used to enhance human performance. The chapter begins by clarifying what biofeedback is, outlining some of the key processes involved, and notes some of its potential uses. It then focuses on some of the main physiological functions that can be altered during biofeedback training. Following this, the chapter explores the rationale for providing biofeedback to alter specific physiological functions. The chapter also explores some of the more prominent factors that may influence the effectiveness of biofeedback training. Evidence is then examined, which suggests that biofeedback can be used to enhance performance. The chapter ends by asking whether the effects of biofeedback are long lived.
