ABSTRACT

Consequently, the film may be thought to broach questions of metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics. In this essay, I would also like to consider the philosophical contribution that Memento makes to aesthetics. For, although Andrew Kania has maintained that Memento does not address the ontology of art (Kania 2008) and, though this may be true under a very strict interpretation of that phrase, nevertheless, Memento does disclose to the thoughtful viewer certain insights about the dynamics of following a motion picture narrative. Thus, it may be construed as an instance of the philosophy of art, specifically the philosophy of motion pictures.
