Engaging and motivating young people

Adolescence is characterised by the development of autonomy and personal identity. Ambivalence is common and, not surprisingly, many adolescents are resistant to therapeutic interventions. Indeed, one of the consistent aspects of AN is the denial that there is any problem in the face of an overt signal of disease, such as starvation, and it is this clash of perceptions which frequently leads to confrontation and coercion into treatment.
