ABSTRACT

Sex and violence, almost always mentioned in tandem, dominate discussions on the content of television. Nonviewers mentioned them 96% of the time in the first interview. Viewers trailed behind at 80%. This circumstance indicates that most people recognize that there is a thing called content. In fact, among some nonviewers, television itself is synonymous with its content. For them, objections to television are objections to content. For example, Charlotte and Thomas Ford reject television almost solely on the grounds of what it shows. Were television shows different, perhaps with no sex and no violence, they might opt to have one. However, the objectionable nature of television content has led the Fords to own no television at all, no family computer and no video games.
