ABSTRACT

I started this book with several questions; others emerged over the course of the research. For example, I started out asking how family life is affected by living without television; however, as my research progressed, I realized that other issues also needed to be addressed. For example, what television is differs from family to family. Furthermore, this difference is related to why they gave up television in the first place. What television is to a family also affects how that family functions. In this chapter, I will begin by summarizing some of the broader findings of this research. Next, I will consider what these findings say more generally about families without television. I will discuss some of the similarities between families and draw conclusions that go beyond those themes that were discussed in earlier chapters. Finally, I will consider the role of television in the American family in today’s media-saturated world.
