ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book outlines a number of strategies to help in the recruitment of students to programmes in higher education, but the strategies described have not been solely concerned with increasing student numbers. Recruitment can focus on maximising the possibilities that the students who apply and enrol can be retained - a pre-entry strategy. Recruitment for retention strategies can be implemented at the level of the individual programme and at the level of the institution. For the recruitment of 'traditional' students, therefore, we would advocate a model based on the intimate involvement of academic staff and current students as early advisors, though this may only be successful within the framework of a supportive institutional management. For the recruitment of non-traditional students, applying to a university as part of its widening participation agenda, a number of the case studies presented excellent practice.
