Introduction

This volume comprises papers written over the past decade on the general theme of assessments of non-Western societies and political institutions by European political thinkers of the Enlightenment, beginning with writings by David Hume in the 1740s and extending to G. W. F. Hegel, who in some respects carried Enlightenment perspectives into the nineteenth century.
