ABSTRACT
Until 1965 NOAA was called the Coast and Geodetic Survey (C&GS). In about 1970, a new numbering system was instituted with classes determined by “horsepower tonnage.” A three digit number in which the first digit indicates the “horsepower tonnage” or the sum of the shaft horsepower plus gross tonnage, with prefix for Research (R) or Survey (S).
