ABSTRACT

Worldwide increasingwater stress has demanded appropriatemeans formitigating the impacts on population and the environment. Existing and recently started actions, initiatives or concepts in the area of water scarcity mitigation and combating negative impacts of global change are already committed for achieving a better management of available water resources. But no matter whether the European Union (EU) Water Framework Directive (WFD), IWRM, or the European Water Initiative, with their commendable principles, they all require tools, instruments and practically realisable solution approaches for being implemented. These should provide significant statements regarding the support of decision-making processes, improving governance, impact mitigation and sustainable responses to water stress.
