ABSTRACT
Cambridge kept its word, and in 1997 sold the encyclopedia database, and all its human and technical accessories, to a Dutch-based IT firm called AND. It was run by a visionary called Hans Abbinck (the ‘A’ of the AND name), and he wanted what we had – not primarily the encyclopedia content, but the classification system which underpinned it. This was what made Hans see dollar signs.
