ABSTRACT
The fallacy of economism Western economics emerged as the necessary means to eradicate poverty. In the pivotal debate about the poor laws in nineteenth-century Britain it was deemed necessary that society be guided by the market. Only more economic growth could create the freedom from natural scarcity and ameliorate poverty.1 Today the same logic is used to justify economic globalization.
