ABSTRACT

According to Soliman and Agresta cancer sub types in this age group vary in comparison with other age groups (2008: 56). Ninety five per cent of cancers in young adults comprise of: Hodgkin’s lymphoma, melanoma, testicular cancer, female genital tract malignancies, thyroid cancer, soft tissue sarcomas, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, leukaemia, brain and spinal cord tumours, breast cancer, bone sarcomas, and non gonadal germ cell tumours. Soliman and Agresta claim that the challenges experienced by patients during treatments for such malignancies persist well after the treatments have ended but point out that much of the data cited reflects the experience of children or older adults, yet there is evidence that late and long-term effects can depend on the age at initial diagnosis.
