ABSTRACT

Trust is said to be the cement that holds a society together, the essence of cooperative action, socially beneficial behavior, and positive relationships between interaction partners. According to Newton (2004: 18), trust is “[t]he belief that others will not deliberately or knowingly do us harm, if they can avoid it, and will look after our interests, if this is possible.” Trust plays a role in the most diverse social situations, from personal relationships and individual economic transactions, to international negotiations (Gambetta 1988).
