Africa composes over 20% of the Earth’s land mass, holds a billion people, and contains 53 separate countries. It is the second largest of the Earth’s seven continents, and it possesses amazing diversity. Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania rises 19,340 feet, while Lake Assal in Djibouti rests 502 feet below sea level (Zijlma, 2009). Africa has the world’s second largest freshwater lake (Lake Victoria), second deepest freshwater lake (Lake Tanganyika), the longest river (Nile), and the lake containing the most diverse species of fish (Lake Malawi).
