ABSTRACT

The twenty-first century has witnessed a growing recognition among both philosophers and film scholars alike that many films from a wide variety of genres and periods deserve and, in some cases, demand philosophical attention. In part, this realization stems from the growing trend of introducing students to philosophy through films. Perhaps because visual media are more accessible to young people than written ones, philosophy professors have realized that students can often more easily identify and understand philosophical issues when they are presented cinematically rather than in the literary texts generally taken to constitute the (Western) philosophical tradition.
