ABSTRACT

The two-part film Gettysburg (Ronald Maxwell, 1993) is based on the novel Killer Angels (1974) by Michael Shaara. The title of the book alludes to Hamlet's soliloquy that begins “What a piece of work is man,” and includes the phrase, “in action, how like an angel.” The story of the famous Civil War battle provides us with two exemplars of practical wisdom, who exercise their virtue in various phases of war.
