ABSTRACT

Mobile communities are oen configured as being at risk in terms of basic educational outcomes such as literacy. Because their travel challenges the routines of standard educational provision, there is a fear that they will fall through the cracks of that provision and be party to a cycle of illiteracy across generations. By contrast, the concept of multiliteracies engages with the complex and multiple arrays of literate experiences that these communities generate as they interact with various social groups, forms of technologies and creative practices. This chapter explores the ways in which this multilterate perspective provides a framework for making sense of the rich learning experiences of mobile communities.
