ABSTRACT

A culture of peace will be achieved when citizens of the world understand global problems, have the skills to resolve confl icts and struggle for justice non-violently, live by international standards of human rights and equity, appreciate cultural diversity, and respect the Earth and each other. Such learning can only be achieved with systematic education for peace. (Hague Appeal for Peace)

Even as violence and war permeate our everyday lives, media, and world, peace is rarely a topic in schools. In desperate circumstances, people oft en respond to violence with violence. Yet, over millennia, many people, individually and collectively, have dedicated their lives to creating peace, oft en under great duress. Th is chapter draws upon their collective wisdom and advocacy to explore integrated approaches to peace that are personal, communal, and global. Such non-violent principles and actions can be engaged and practiced through peace education.
