ABSTRACT

Continuing with a supply side analysis, this chapter examines the economic power of ethnicity,1 and the mechanisms through which it mediates Salvadoran and Peruvian entrepreneurship. The chapter is organized in two sections. First, it compares Salvadoran and Peruvian ethnic-based resources, including cultural and social group endowments. Equally important, it highlights the strategic value of family and extended kin in the management of immigrant businesses. Last, it reviews Salvadorans and Peruvians’ business strategies, demonstrating that ethnicity signifi cantly patterns their fi nancing, labor, marketing, and daily management practices.
