ABSTRACT
Articles about support groups for nurses, psychiatrists and medical students ®rst started appearing in medical and nursing journals in the 1970s and early 1980s (Kanas 1986), yet to our knowledge this is the ®rst book devoted exclusively to the topic of staff support groups in the helping professions. Why should this be so ± that a topic with a 30 year history has not invited the detailed attention that a book can give?
