ABSTRACT

Gender and work are two of the most important social identities, and how roles relate to these two constructs is central to the operation of society. Moreover, these two social facets have been changing rapidly in contemporary society. Traditional gender models are being replaced by modern alternatives. For example, the male-breadwinner and female-homemaker paradigm is being supplanted by a modern dual-earners norm, and the old division of labor between men dominating the public sphere while women handled the private sphere is giving way to more egalitarian and gender-neutral arrangements. In part in response to the gender-role trends, and also as a result of technological developments and the impact of economic globalization, the structure of work is changing.
