ABSTRACT

Introduction This chapter covers the postwar years, 1946 to 1970. Other chronological breaks could have been made. Historical, economic, and even statistical analysis points to 1959 as a watershed in the industry (Duke et al., 1977, Mancke, 1968, and Rippe, 1970), but the domestic market structure of the industry changed little. This institutional stability of the industry led this author to use the period 1946 to 1970.
