The early history: 1830 to 1860

Introduction: technology, growth, and imports To put the later history of the steel industry in context, we examine the period between 1830 and 1860 just before the introduction of mass steel production. During this period, the American iron sector transformed itself from a group of traditional iron producing firms into a sector capable of innovation in an industrialized economy.
