ABSTRACT

This chapter explores what a dissertation or final-year project is in order to better understand the distinctive features of this form of assessment within your degree programme. It highlights the ways in which the dissertation differs from other modules you may be taking or be about to undertake and the expectations it places on you, the learner, to take responsibility for your own learning. By the end of this chapter, you should have a better understanding of the following:

• what a dissertation is; • what makes the dissertation special; • what your dissertation may look like; • how to prepare for the dissertation.
