ABSTRACT

The world we live in is shaped daily by events that occur all around the globe. Such events might include terror attacks, natural disasters, armed confl ict, political elections, and celebrity weddings. Due to limitations of time and space, news media gatekeepers must identify a few events as more newsworthy than others. As noted by Chang, Shoemaker, and Brendlinger (1987), research into international news coverage has yielded a rich body of empirical research describing the various aspects of how the news media cover the world. A more specifi c emphasis within research of international news coverage is research of the determinants of international news coverage.
