ABSTRACT

The current high-speed development of the Chinese economy, and constant raising of the people’s standard of living, have already accumulated a great deal of national wealth and fiscal power, and formed a market economy system; but at the same time very many problems are in need of solution, such as disparities of income allocation, regional economic differentials, environmental pollution, etc. The requirement to build a harmonious society conforms extremely well to the reality of contemporary China; the problem is how the issues of disharmony we face are actually to be solved. Many scholars are now reconsidering China’s reform path. Some argue that we have taken a wrong road, leading to the present disharmony. This truly is a major issue requiring earnest review and deliberation

China’s reform strategy is not the same as many eastern European transitional states, but I do not think the entire process was deliberately designed. From the entire decision-making process, China’s reforms can be seen to have actually been a gradual process of “crossing a river by feeling the stones.”
