ABSTRACT

The growth of reception studies was associated with celebrations of consecutive anniversaries of Frederic Chopin's birth and death. The creation and during dissemination of Chopin's legends and myths started is lifetime and took place in his biographies and in letters and memoirs of his contemporaries, students, and fellow composers. Franz Liszt's biography of Chopin is an excellent example of such myth-making. This chapter discusses historical sources, collected studies, individual essays, reception and myths in Poland, reception by composers, and reception in other countries, including Russia. Chopin in the arts, including iconography, monuments, literature, poetry, dance, theater, and film. It includes general issues, pianists, individual topics, and new approaches to performance studies; selected discographies; and Chopin institutions, societies, museums and competitions. The chapter includes articles about Chopin's portrait, daguerreotypes and selected exhibition catalogues that feature numerous original items with their provenance and history.
