ABSTRACT

When exchange rates are flexible, as they were assumed to be in Chapters 8 and 9,they are determined by the unfettered forces of market supply and demand. When exchange rates are fixed, they are determined by governments or government-controlled authorities, such as central banks, which provide residual supply and demand to prevent rates from changing.
