Science and Technology
Ours is a scientifi c and technological culture. What this means at least in part is that people in our society turn to science for answers as to how the world works and to technological solutions for most of their problems. Science provides us with knowledge of nature, even our own human nature, and gives us the capability of manipulating nature in our own interests. Technology involves the application of scientifi c fi ndings and gives us the means to use and shape nature to accomplish the objectives of individuals and organizations. Even if we are not professional scientists, we learn to think about the world in scientifi c terms and are used to thinking of technological solutions. But science and technology are at best a mixed blessing. In addition to solving problems, they oftentimes create new problems with which society has to cope in some fashion. Science and technology impact society and often have unintended consequences.
