This book grew out of an article that appeared in the Harvard Business Review in 2005 in which Warren Bennis and James O’Toole, two management professors at the University of Southern California, analyze the reasons for the alleged failure of business schools to adequately prepare their graduates for the world of business.1 This article prompted me to write a response in the form of a paper that I presented at a conference and that was subsequently published in The Journal of Business Ethics.2 In the course of writing this paper I came to some new thoughts about management and the role of business organizations in society and I thought a book might be in order to explore the implications of this thinking.
