ABSTRACT

This chapter offers an overview of the youth employment situation in contemporary China and discusses the opportunities and problems which young people face as the country moves further toward a market economy. The chapter starts by introducing the social and historical contexts in which youth employment is situated and then shows the stratified nature of youth employment through the examination of young migrant workers and urban graduates. In particular, this chapter focuses on how labour market pressures have manifested themselves depending on the gender, educational background and residency status of a young person.
