ABSTRACT

A book that originated in a conference about The Ecological Indian provides many chapters addressing the controversy. In one of them, anthropologist Stephen Langdon (2007) documents that the Tlingit living on the west coast of Prince of Wales Island had developed a long-standing relationship with the salmon that returned to their rivers every year. Langdon and the Tlingit people he consulted explain the relationship by telling the story of Salmon Boy, a mythic charter that prescribed proper behavior toward salmon.
