ABSTRACT
In the chapter entitled “History versus the Historians” in his book Lunacy and Letters, Chesterton returns to his theme that literary approaches to history often do more to bring the past to life than purely formal historical works. This is because the literary writer is attempting to describe individualized human beings while the historian is constrained by the more rudimentary factual material at his disposal.
