ABSTRACT

The passage from one institutional structure to the next is a gradual process that reveals the manner in which past social relations are transformed into new relations. Capital-labor relations in the iron and steel industry during the progressive era are no exception to the general rule. It is thus necessary to consider the special character of capital-labor relations in the iron and steel industry within the context of the late nineteenth century LIS before one may correctly comprehend the nature of the same relations within the progressive era RIS. This section thus provides the historical background that is essential to a proper understanding of the capital-labor confrontation that occurred in the steel industry with the formation of U.S. Steel.
