ABSTRACT

During the 1980s the CACM went into further disruption as a result of the impact of the world recession on the economies, civil wars and foreign intervention in Nicaragua and El Salvador. The fi rst half of the decade was dominated by political confl ict, which prevented the reconstruction of the CACM. Most political efforts concentrated on the avoidance of direct military intervention by the US and the prevention of a military success of the left-wing guerrillas over the government in El Salvador.
