ABSTRACT

Intergovernmentalism possesses heuristic power to explain integration in this region. This chapter fi rst discusses intergovernmentalism as a theoretical perspective on regional integration. Second, it outlines the theoretical foundations of intergovernmentalism as applied to Europe and assesses its usefulness for explaining integration in Central America. In order to apply intergovernmentalism to Central America some modifi cations are made to integrate the impact of the structural environment in the integration process.
