ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses verbs with separable and those with inseparable prefixes. Intonation (stress) plays an important role in determining whether a verb is separable or inseparable. Most separable prefixes are stressed: ópbellen ‘call’, ‘phone’, úitgaan ‘go out’, ínvullen ‘fill in’, ‘complete’, nádenken ‘think’, ‘ponder’. Most inseparable prefixes are unstressed: bestéllen ‘order’, erváren ‘experience’, gelóven ‘believe’, herkénnen ‘recognize’, ontmóeten ‘meet’, vergéten ‘forget’. Note: the accents indicate emphasis.
