ABSTRACT
The French government official could not believe that there was talk of one more threat to his country’s dominance of the global wine industry. First, it was the so-called invasion by New World wine producers. Now there was talk of transgenic wine. Scientists had unraveled the genetic secrets of the pinot noir grape that was used to produce the world’s finest wines, making it possible to now produce the grape in places where cultivation had been inhospitable.1
