ABSTRACT
This chapter explores several theoretical issues that arise in the study of universals of language change, from the perspective of both processes of dialect divergence and language contact. A major conclusion is that drawing a dichotomy between proposed ‘vernacular universals’ and contact-induced change is not a good idea because many linguistic changes involve both kinds of process-that is, various processes of contact-induced change and also universal tendencies of various kinds.
