ABSTRACT

Attention to unconscious processes and their inƒuence on conscious mental life forms the nexus of Freud’s psychoanalysis both theoretically and technically. His work, despite frequent contradictory developments, begins and ends with the unconscious and unconscious processes. From the psychoanalytic perspective, unconscious processes are fundamental to psychic life, and understanding their operation is critical to psychoanalysis. Despite the limitations imposed by Enlightenment secular philosophy and an associated dualistic scientic objectivism that Freud (1938a) felt compelled to conform to, his delineation of this “Realm of the Illogical” (p. 169) provides a creative, radical, and monumental point of entry for understanding and transforming the psyche.
