ABSTRACT

School counselors-in-training have identied supervision as a vital key to successful practicum and internship experiences. Furthermore, they have identied the clinical experiences as the most inuential and benecial aspect of their academic training (McClam, 2000). Therefore, practicum and internship supervision conducted by a professional school counselor who has had training in supervision and experience as a school counselor is critically important. As mentioned in Chapter 1, you may either have the opportunity to choose your own supervisor, or the program placement coordinator may select a site supervisor for you. Your placement will be based on the coordinator’s knowledge of the school site counseling program, the supervisor’s ability to supervise, philosophy of school counseling, and willingness to meet with you on a regular basis. In either case, you need to discuss your personal and professional goals with the placement coordinator so that your needs are known in selecting a site. Once a supervisor has been selected, meeting with this individual and learning about the school is an essential rst step. The information and activities in this chapter are created to assist you in thinking about the process of supervision as you learn from an experienced professional. Making an initial contact with your supervisor, appropriate dress, understanding school policies and procedures, and methods for introducing yourself to the individuals with whom you will work are included in this chapter.
